COMBINATION ESSAY
What will you do if you were able to change everything, told you were the reason behind your sickness or if you were in control of what kind of service you got? Would you be willing to change what you knew all this years as right just because one person said it was wrong? What can one really expect from reading a book that teaches you how to write almost making you feel like a preschooler, to watching a film based on how people blame the fast food chain instead of themselves for their weight gain and health issues to a commercial that tells you that switching to a certain company will guarantee you fast internet service and 4g coverage everywhere you go to a story all about a library full of books and new discovery's. Would you stand up for punctuation's or start to blame yourself for you health issues or maybe switch to that other phone company or would you start to appreciate the library more? In order to find out we will have to know what our options really are. In eat shoots and leave the author has an obsession with the punctuation should be used while in super size me the author Morgan goes out of his way to prove a point to Americans while in the AT&T commercial children informer Americans that faster is always better and in the library of babel a boy tells an intriguing story about a library full of books.
A bestselling book on punctuation. That’s very unlikely then again it's British. Many people tend to say British's are obsessed with class differences and that knowing your apostrophe is a way of belittling the uneducated. But the author of eats shoots and leaves Lynne truss seems to disagree with this statement saying “not so Punctuation is no more a class issue than the air we breathe". As a child, Ms. Truss has always been obsessed with punctuation and how people write. To me this seem very unusually because i barely think about what a book would be like without punctuation. On page 20 of the book she says "The reason to stand up for punctuation is that without it there is no reliable way of communicating meaning. Punctuation herd’s words together, keep others apart. Punctuation directs you how to read; in the way musical notation directs a musician how to play". I do agree with Mrs. Truss on this we may not see the rightful meaning of punctuation in a book. We like to read and punctuation's helps us understand what we are reading and hearing. For example full stop can be used like a knife to cut sentences to the required length. Example: Paris is the capital of France. I enjoy reading books! Commas are also a great way of separating things and topics in a list. You can always use them to mark out the less important parts in a sentence. Example: I would like carrots, an apple, and cheese and fruit juice in my lunch box . Exclamation marks are also very helping full in reading anything. They are used to express astonishment or surprise or to emphasis a comment short, sharp phase. Example: Help! Help! That's incredible! Get out! Watch out! Questions marks are my favorite punctuation's. It is used to mark at the end of ever direct question. Not indirect but direct questions. Example: how are you? What is your name? Do you like to watch television? Many people use question marks for reported questions which are very much wrong to do. Example: He asks me how i was doing. She asked my name. I asked Mum if she liked television. So you see after all there is a reason to stand up for punctuation because without them we are like a fish without water. On page 41 Mrs. Truss says "But when the possessor is a regular plural, the apostrophe follows the “s”: The boys’ hats (more than one boy). The babies’ bibs. I apologize if you know all this, but the point is many, many people do not". I would have to confess that I never knew that I always thought that the way to say "boy" in a plural form was “boys" so this really thought me something new. I know I'm not the only one out there that didn't really know that you need to but an apostrophe after the word boys meaning more than one boy. On page 90-91 she went on to say "The first rule of bracketing commas is that you use them to mark both ends of a “weak interruption” to a sentence – or a piece of “additional information”. The commas mark the places where the reader can – as it were – place an elegant two-pronged fork and cleanly lift out a section of the sentence, leaving no obvious damage to the whole". Thus, John Keats, who never did any harm to anyone, is often invoked by grammarians. This is very true I can say I have read some of my friend’s papers in cases where they try to use textural evidences to support a point but fail to use the commas to show the text being used to support a statement or they forget the separate a list of things being said. I don't believe we don't are lazy enough to use punctuation's the right way i feel as though we think and believe it is really not necessary toward reading which is very much wrong. Punctuation's are a big part of writing. In the book Mrs. Lynne give an example of how an author in 1947 George Orwell decided semicolons are unnecessary stops and he will not be using any in his next book. In this case i very much agree with him sometimes semicolons are over used and really not necessary, but to write a book without them that's taking it a little too far. Then again semicolons are not only used to put a full stop to sentences but also to join two sentences together. Which at times is very help full in writing a new report or a book? Almost the end of the book she says this on page 184 " But I can’t help feeling that our punctuation system, which has served the written word with grace and ingenuity for centuries, must not be allowed to disappear without a fight". I was a bite confused and shocked at the same time when she said this because the way she per traded herself as this person that could live without punctuation's and was at times so angry with the way people write and the way people seem to think punctuation's are not important. I still can't come to terms with this statement then again i might just be misunderstanding the meaning of this sentence or maybe people do change. Over all this was a great book that thought me a lot of things i didn't know and a lot of things i knew that were wrong.
Super-Size I am the perfect movie to watch to understand the benefits and harms of certain eating habits. It teaches us about the dangers of fast food. Not only that, but it also explains what foods to eat, how much of those foods, and ways to maintain a healthy weight. Super-Size I am a great teaching tool for students and everyone else. For example, it shows us the risks of eating fast food, specifically McDonald’s fast food. Morgan Spurlock ate nothing but McDonald’s fast food for thirty days straight. He gained 25 pounds and also doubled his chances for heart disease. It took Morgan 14 months to lose his extra weight and he said it was nothing close to being easy. In addition, this movie shows the ways schools are affecting obesity in their students. Vending machines with pop are one of the main reasons. Some schools have banned soda vending machines and even prohibited students from bringing soda. Furthermore, Super-Size Me gives awareness about the consumption of fast food. Forty percent of American meals are eaten out of the house; that is about 121,623,890 people! Because of fast food restaurants, sixty percent of Americans, about 182,435,834 people, are either overweight or obese. With this kind of information and fact you would think Americans would stop their daily rounds to McDonald's. Yet they don't you find that many American kids are overweight not because they want to but because it's a life style chosen to them by their parents. Schools also have a big effect on the weight gain of kids. Many families can't afford to make a bag lunch a day for their kids to eat, so the only choice the kids are left with is eating school lunch which has been proven to be 25% of the reason kids gain weight. Many schools give out pizza for breakfast and sometimes nachos for lunch this are things kids like but are not good for them. Watching this made me very angry because all our parents’ tax dollars are going toward school and all the counties money is also going toward schools yet they are unable to provide us with a balances meal. I feel adults are grown enough to know what wrong and right for them. My model has always been if you look in the mirror and don't like what you see do something about it and stop complaining and blaming fast food chains. What Americans need to do is stop sitting around expecting all this fast food owners to tell you that their foods are harmful and are not good for you because if you do sit around and wait you’re going to be growing bigger and bigger every day. What really caught my attention in this movie was when they said America is known for being big in everything and lately has also been known for having the biggest people. This is not the type of reputation a country wants but when the government and health facilitates are doing nothing about it what can we do. This documentary film shares many interesting facts. For instance, the people of America eat more than 1,000,000 animals hourly. Another fact is that there are only seven items on McDonald’s menu that contain absolutely no sugar. As well as McDonald’s being unhealthy, it represents 43 percent of America’s fast food market, which makes things even worse. Also, each day 1 in 4 Americans visits a fast food restaurant. This makes me so angry like are you serious. I feel as though because the food is cheap and taste good people seem to feel as though that's the right way to go about things eating fast food just because it cost less. No I'm sorry to put sand in your coffee but the only good fast food is doing to you is expanding your waist line. When Morgan went in the McDonald's restaurant and asked for a nutrition chart i was very shock that most McDonald's didn't have it and the ones that did have it had it hidden away in a place where people can't see. Then again i ask this question should we blame the people or the owners of this fast food companies. Big fast food companies like McDonald's and Burger King spend about 1 billion dollars a year on television ads promoting their brand while health ad spends about 35 thousands a year. Is this shocking to you? Well it's not to be because many people feel health foods taste nasty so fast food companies take advantage of that and start making meals for kids that come with toys and making a play ground in their restaurant making parents feel obligated to buy fast food. When John Robbins said that his uncle died at the age of 51 and his father didn't want to believe that the ice cream his was making all this time could have cause his partners death . It made me so made, of course you can't believe that with all that money your making how can you believe it can be harm full to others. If you look back many, many years ago, weight was not such a huge issue. That is because the fast food industry were not so popular. This not only prevented people from becoming so weighty, but since they were not getting so much fat they also were active. Overall, Super-Size Me teaches that fast food restaurants such as McDonald’s are extremely unhealthy. The food should be eaten once in a while. I would hate to be a hypocrite and say don't eat fast food when I do but what I’m really trying to say is limit the amount you eat or don't eat it at all. It affects you in many ways, like by increasing your weight, and even cutting your life span. So when do Americans say enough is enough?
The other night I was sitting in front of the television watching a late night show, when a commercial break came on, I instinctively clicked on the remote to flip through the channels to see what else was on. As I surfed through the channels I came across dozens of infomercials, a commercial for getting a college degree at home, and a few psychic hotline advertisements. I stopped clicking the remote after a while to see what the commercials were selling, and to see how the products cheeps were. There were advertisements on how at&t was the fastest network and how I can download faster on at&t compared to other networks. I automatically went ahead to thinking was this true I mean I'm not the biggest fun of my current phone company right now so why not switch to at&t and get 4g everywhere. I mean little kids in the commercial are saying it so it must be true. I mean they know what's fast and what's slow so why am I still heir thinking. See there we go you would be shock to see how many Americans think like that. Commercials use things like logos, pathos, and ethos to crab the viewer’s attention. Many commercials use ethos. If you see that new make up looking good on Oprah and she's telling you it works for breaks out. We tend to follow what our celebrity role models tend to say so if we see Beyonce drinking pep sis we run out and get pep sis or if we see Nicki Minaj wearing a skirt we run out and get it. So because the makers of the commercials see this trend they tend to us famous faces to attract their views. Example:"The veterinarian says that an Australian shepherd will be the perfect match for our active lifestyle." So the question is should we believe everything we see? But ethos is not the only way commercial directors get the viewer attention they use pathos. If you see someone crying and telling you I've been there and I've done that I would absolutely hate for that to happen to you. You automatically think they must care about me enough to share this information. Well sweet heart no they don't the only reason they sharing is because their getting paid. Example: "You should consider another route:" I heard that that street is far more dangerous and ominous at night than during the daytime." Other way commercials directors get your attention is by using logos. I feel confident saying logos is like a cause and effect relationship you give your viewers a cause of why something is happen to them then you give your magically perfect solution to their problem by using facts and events. Example:"History has shown time and again that absolute power corrupts absolutely." So you see believing everything you see or hear is not always advised. Then again some of this product don't work. I will use an at&t commercial for example. They use little kid to achieve their goal of telling American that fast is better than slow referring to the other companies as slow and them as fast. But what i would really like is for one of this network companies to come up with a commercial that doesn't talk all about the other company being slow or fast but a commercial telling me how they will work with me in making sure I download fast and get the best quality internet speed available and also great phones that will last me a long time not some garbage about fast and slow. I don't mean to trash talk this commercial but it gets boring hearing the same thing over and over again like change your script and tries to impress me because I’m not impressed. They need to start searching elsewhere for their ideas because it socks. If i didn't' already make this clear to you switching to a different company does not guarantee you that the company will keep their word, so what you need to do is do research before switching to any other company. I think the best thing to do is to go out in the streets and listen and ask people their option and give them what they want and asking not what they believe is good for them.
This library of babels is story about a narrator that talks about his love for the library and books. The narrator also gives his option on how he feels about the way people should use the library and the many ways the library can be used for. I do believe the library is very useful even though many people are unable to see it. The library holes a lot of information yet unknown to mankind. The significance of having such a library is greater than a collection of all of the world’s most important literary works that have been or will be written, translated into every conceivable language. The narrator has been on a search his whole life for a book that is suppose to be the "total book" which will be able to explain every other book in the library. As a librarian you whole life basically revolves around the library. So when you are really into something you feel the need to share with other, even when they might think of your passions as dumb or crazy you still share out of love for the thing. The narrator really loves the library because he spent his whole life looking for a book he never found yet he still wishes on day somebody fines it. It very unlike for a person to love something so much and not have it but wish other man gets what his always wanted. That's real love because he is not basing the finding of this book on who finds it but the need that somebody those find it for the sake of the library. I feel as though we don't give much credit to the librarian for all they go though to make sure we get what we need. All library's hold important history about books, authors and the library it self. I believe if we took time and just studied the library we would be shock of our findings. Would i from now on start to appreciate my library more? Maybe, but it's very hard for them to expect us to be able to be into the library when our generation has been introduced to technology. So i feel the solution to this would to be for the library'r to try and embrace the technology and open websites that our like a library that way people will be able to excess books, video and news.
This summer assignment has really opened my eyes to think beyond just what I see and hear but to be able to understand and broaden my thoughts not to just act and say things based on what I know and what I believe is right. From reading the book eats, shoots and leave, the film super-size me to the at&t commercial, and the story the library of babel I see a connect in the four. They all are informative meaning they are informing us of something we either know or didn't know or either something we want to know. From looking at the cover of eats, shoots, and leaves you would not kept the book to be completely about punctuation's. Punctuation's are very important in our everyday life so standing up for them should be a privilege. Have we every thought for a second that we might just be the reason we are dying. I believe if you don't care for your self no one will. So to see a man take a life changing mission just to prove to others that fast food is not good for you is beyond my wildest imaginations. The question now becomes are we the problem be hide our height issues and weight lost? Yes we are the reason. When we stop blaming fast food for our weight and health and stop eating then we can be labeled as not being the problem but till then we are the cause for every transformation our bodies go though. Should we believe everything we hear on television? No unless you have studied the commercial industry enough to tell whether or not an ad or right or not. Commercials are like the RIS going after their targets. When do we start appreciate the library more? I feel as though we do appreciate the library more than one can think of, appreciating it doesn't literally mean we have to talk about it or go to it everyday it just means we need to show some acknowledgment of it. We not only learn new things every year but we gain more knowledge by the day. So i say keep an open mind to everything you see and hear. I would not recommend this summer assignment to incoming AP students because for one they don't know how to write an analysis essay and two most of the things on this assignment were very unclear as to what was needed to be done by the student, maybe if the assignment were to be explain properly many student would have been able to do this assignment with out ant problems. I pretty much love to take on challenges that I understand would I have to say this was a challenge , yes because i didn't know how to write an analysis essay, so that made it very difficult for me to do, But at the end of the day no matter how hard an assignment is i always do it to the best of my abilities.
